3. London Pairs Patchwork – Mr and Mrs Stephen, and Virginia

“Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” Emilie Buchwald.

Virginia Woolf, age 11, watching her parents, Julia and Lesley Stephen, read. The photo was taken in 1892/3 at Talland House, their Cornwall holiday home, by Vanessa Stephen/ Bell (Thanks Emily).

This is the third square of my London Faces Patchwork. It is a patchwork of papers gleaned from the pavements (mostly) of the city in which I live. There are sixteen squares making up the whole piece. You can see it here.

The patchwork can be found in my shop.

The photo was cut from a NPG leaflet.
