Pearl Mackie’s Eye

 

This eye belongs to Pearl Mackie, actor. I cut it from Time Out London (April 11-17, 2017. No. 2425), which I found on a train.

The photographer is Andy Parsons, who is a lovely bloke.

Ian Richards’ Eye

This eye belongs to Ian Richards, homelessness charity worker. I cut it from Time Out London (December 13-19, 2016), which I found on a train.

The average age of death for a homeless person is forty-seven, thirty years younger than the national average.

The photographer is Andy Parsons, multi-award winning photojournalist.

Pelé’s Eye

 

This eye belongs to Pelé, who is a footballer. He can also sing and play the guitar. I cut it (the eye) from Sport Magazine (25 September, 2015. Issue 420), which I found on a train. The photographer is Franck Fife.

Alan Sugar’s Eye

This eye belongs to Alan Sugar, who has a ‘meaty index finger’. I cut it (eye, not finger) from The Radio Times (19 December 2015 – 1 January, 2016), there was no photographer credited*.

Prince Harry’s Eye

This eye belongs to Prince Harry. I cut it from The Radio Times (17-30 December, 2016), there was no photographer credited*.

The eye was part of an article promoting PH’s charity.

1. Patchwork Of Mothers – Herodias, Maybe…

A number of weeks ago, when I first cut the above square, I knew this woman was Herodias, mother of Salome. Now, I am not sure if I know that.

I love the way she sadly observes Picasso’s treatment of Esther Williams, whilst being given the eye by Marlene Dietrich, and an oblivious Judy Garland stares out into the youthful distance.

The first face on my Patchwork Of Mothers, has been taken from a picture of ‘Salome Receives The Head Of John The Baptist’, by Caravaggio (c1609-10).

Since Salome’s mother plays such a big part in the story, I have always assumed it was her in the painting, and I still think this, I just can’t find any proof. The only mention I can find is ‘the old woman’.

I mean, look at the way she is leaning over Salome’s shoulder (below). Surely her mother?

Also, whilst looking for clarification, I discovered that some experts doubt this is even the work of Caravaggio.

So, a good I-have-no-information start for my patchwork, the rest of which you can see below.

Anyway, I cut it from a National Gallery (What’s On, Autumn 2016) leaflet, left on a cafe table last year.

At last, the mothers are finished and in my shop.

As usual, hand-stitched from things others discard.

I’m about to start the process of recording the origins of each square, both here, and on Instagram.
